|09:43 am - Le Sigh|
The laptop saga continues.
Last week, I got a call from the tech people telling me that locating a new motherboard was hard, and they were still working on it. Okay. Since the last time it took them FOUR effing months to fix it, getting such a call within ten days wasn't bad at all.
Then this past Wednesday I got a text message telling me that it was ready and I'd get a call on when to pick it up. Cool.
Come Saturday with no such call, I checked their website's tracking app, and I'm told it's ready for pick-up. Given it's a busy Saturday (loading sacks of cat-food and cat-litter, oh yay), I can only be there around 2. So I go get the replacement laptop they gave me and, with bf in tow, I go to the store... and find a tn people line-up in the tech support booth. Le sigh. So I wait for about fourty minutes while the bf is loose in the store. He returns every five minutes with PC games, keyboards and such stuff: Can we get this? How about this? This one? And this one? (There's a reason why I keep the credit cards in *my* wallet at all times...)
And it's my time, guess what? It's NOT ready. In fact, it cannot be fixed, so I get a shiny new one. Cool, right? Only, not so much. I have to go back home, gather everything that came with the old one and bring it to them to get the new. Which comes with Windows 8.1 (that I hate), has no MS Word (shoot me now) and needs to be set up.
So the tech guy (who mumbled something about trying to reach me but failed - yeah, dude, nice try) agreed to set it up for me and insert my documents from the old one (most already safe in a USB stick, save for one unfinished story that was saved elsewhere in it) and they'll call me (le sigh) to pick it up on Monday.
That old laptop never worked well, despite its price, so perhaps the new one will be a better fit. At least coughing up the euros for the extended guarantee really paid off this time.
But now I really need to find a used copy of MS Word, because OpenOffice doesn't work for me. *headdesk*
Current Mood: frustrated
Urgh, technology. I hope the new laptop will do what it's supposed to do, namely WORK. *crosses fingers* Computer woes are the worst.
Thanks. I really miss my old PC, but there's no room for it here...
Yay on the new laptop!:D Though yup, lol, tech support and stores are the worst on Saturday-I avoid them so much, you don't know!:P
Well, if they had bothered to contact me earlier, I'd be able to avoid them too. Hopefully things will be better tomorrow morning.
Oh no! Hopefully the new one will work better, but Windows 8 is a pain. If you want the desktop to look more like a normal computer, install something like Classic Shell which will bring the start menu back. You can also set it up to load the desktop on startup rather than the app screen. I can almost pretend mines a normal computer now!
Oooh, good idea. I'll see if I can do it, once I get it tomorrow.
Oooh, thank you!
Alas, Word Starter doesn't work on laptops that came with Windows 8.1. I'm trying to find a way around the conflict, but for now it's back to OpenOffice for me...
